“What I saw were hope and anticipation when I first looked into their eyes.”, Xiangrui Kong, the lead singer of Watermelon Can, said effusively when he was teaching the kids at Dan-zhai middle school of Guizhou province as a volunteer. After the memorable experience, he laments, “While we are savoring the feast provided by our parents, they are taking care of their grandparents at home, because all the adults left to make a living in the city; while we are feeling sleepy staring at the digital screen in bright classrooms, they are rubbing their eyes again and again to try to take in knowledge in dim classrooms that has scanty light and occasional blackouts; while we are squandering money in KTVs and fancy shopping malls, they are struggling on the way to school, having to conquer steep mountain heights.” Kids in big cities are very likely to ignore the reality of those kids living somewhere in the mountains, who are really the same as them, who also have dreams but not the opportunities to make them come true.

Fortunately, a group of young student musicians are willing to do whatever they can to help those kids in the mountains. They want to arrange a fund-raising charity rock gig, dedicated specifically to the children living in the mountains. Admittedly, a single rock show may contribute marginally in improving their living conditions, but the power of music connects the teenagers, filling them with courage and faith that encourage them to go for their dreams.

The success not only belongs to the student bands performing on stage, but also the audience; it is you people’s participation that make us believe tomorrow could become better.

The ticket is no more expensive than a meal, yet to those kids in the mountains, it means a few more books to read, a few more clothing to wear in the winter, and a little more hope and persistence for the future.

Therefore, let us gather on the 24th of May: starting from the afternoon, a few guitars, a group of enthusiastic teenagers, at Yu Going Yi Shan. Let us enjoy music, enjoy freedom and together make a change!
