For the seventh time since 2004, bilingual singer/songwriter and banjo player ABIGAIL WASHBURN returns to China for another extremely limited number of performances. This time around, audiences will witness yet another version of the Abigail Washburn Roadshow: Along for the China tour is multi-instrumentalist — and Mandarin-speaker — KAI WELCH, whose trumpet, piano, guitar and accordion will add new layers to Abigail’s special mix of folk and traditional American music with a Chinese twist. Also along for the ride will be a range of guest musicians for which Abigail’s China shows has been known, ranging from traditional instrumentalists, singers, folkies and more. Musical guests are TBD but will definitely add to the international flavour that Abigail’s fans have come to know, expect and love.
Abigail Washburn is a Nettwerk Records recording artist whose years living in China have played a major role in her music. She has released solo albums as well as recording and performing with highly-acclaimed folk girl group UNCLE EARL and along with the Sparrow Quartet, a superstar collection of musicians: Up-and-coming cellist Ben Sollee, Grammy-nominated fiddler Casey Driessen and multi-Grammy winner Bela Fleck. Her trips to China have taken her and other musicians, including the Sparrow Quartet, to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing, Lhasa and more. She has performed with a range of musicians in all of the cities in which she visited and has worked with a trio of Beijing-based female traditional musicians (erhu, pipa, guzheng) with whom she has performed at the Beijing Jazz Festival and as the first artist to take to Yugongyishan’s ‘new’ stage, as well as with Beijing folk musicians from Hanggai, Iz (Mamu’er) and more. Recently in the United States, Abigail performed alongside legendary comedian, actor and banjo player Steve Martin.
Kai Welch is a mulit-instrumentalist raised in the wilderness of Oregon who has worked with a range of Nashville artists after moving to the great musical city in 2005. He is at work on his solo debut album as well as in the planning stages of recording Abigail Washburn’s upcoming recording. Abigail and Kai are currently performing as a duet, appearing with Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlins among others, before they go into the studio to record Abigail’s upcoming album.
